Unity Labyrinth

Unity of Kalamazoo is delighted to provide this free, accessible, all-ages meditative resource to the community, one of only three labyrinths in Kalamazoo.

The Unity Labyrinth is full of love and dedication. Designed by our own Kent Brigham (pictured during construction), this labyrinth is patterned after the medieval octagonal style with six circuits. Many of the bricks used for construction were sourced from the Wellness Cottage that previously occupied the space.

Unity of Kalamazoo participates in the annual World Labyrinth Day “Walk as One at 1”, meeting at about 12:45pm. This event is held the first Saturday in May. People in every time zone begin their meditative walk at 1pm their time, resulting in a wave of consciousness rippling across the entire planet.

Both Christian and non-Christian labyrinths have a single, but complicated path. This path leads to a final destination, perhaps symbolizing our journey from birth to death. The most well preserved ancient labyrinth is located at Chartres Cathedral, which was built somewhere around the year 1200. The Chartres labyrinth has also been described as “the Journey to Jerusalem” as a metaphor to reaching an eternal life after death.
